Our World: Youth Visions of Family and Community

February 1, 2012
through March 2, 2012

Reception: Friday, Feb. 10, 5-8 pm

This exhibit is the culmination of Laurel Dell Elementary students’ work with Mentor Artist Angela Baker, who has been teaching at the school this Fall through Youth in Arts’ Artists in Schools program.

The exhibit includes an 8’ x 8’ mural designed and created by students with Baker’s guidance. The students chose to create a representation of Laurel Dell’s diverse student population: their heritage, hopes and creativity. Painted on weather-resistant boards, the mural will be installed on campus after the exhibit closes.

“Our World” also includes samples of student work leading up to the mural creation and photo books showing the process in action. Students developed skills including color mixing, composition, drawing, and various painting techniques. They also explored questions around family and community in developing the mural content: what does your family do together? What are your family's traditions and celebrations?

Two of Baker’s own paintings are also on display, providing a chance for students to see their work alongside their Mentor Artist’s work, and allowing visitors an opportunity to contemplate connections between teaching artists’ inspiration and their work with students.

Visitors to the YIA Gallery can contemplate these same questions and their hopes for their own commuities as they create and decorate "handprints" to become part of a collaborative mobile featured in the gallery. To arrange a free visit to the gallery for your school or after school group, email us or call 415-457-4878 ext. 18.

"Our World" will continue through March 2. Visit the Youth in Arts Gallery at 917 C Street, Monday through Friday 11-2, or by appointment (415-457-4878). We will also be open from 5-8 for 2nd Fridays Art Walk Downtown on February 10 and on Saturday, February 11, from 10-1.
