What To Prepare For An Audition
Please prepare one minute of one song of any genre. It's probably better if the genre is Pop, Jazz, Rock, R&B, Gospel, Folk or Blues, though.

  How Long Are Auditions?
Auditions can take a while depending on turnout. Its best to be prepared to stay until at least 10:30 pm, and sometimes auditions even run later – if the audition turn out is large it may run until midnight. All auditioners stay until they have completed all three parts of the audition process.

This is a rare late night for the group - regular rehearsals do not run beyond 9 pm.

  What Happens At An Audition?
Step One - Sing! Perform your one minute a cappella audition piece for the group.

Step Two - Pitch matching. In this step, the music director plays a series of pitches on the keyboard and you sing them back on whatever vowel you want.

Step Three - Group Blending. Sing a background part in a quintet/sextet with 'Til Dawn. We teach the auditioners a background part to one of our songs. Each auditionee comes in and sings the part with a quintet/sextet of `Til Dawn members. This step is so important to an a cappella group which blends voice in harmonies to produce everything including the 'instruments'.

What To Bring To An Audition?
We take a digital photo to remember you by so no need to bring a head shot or resume. So really you just need to be prepared for the vocal audition with a one minute song. We do ask you to fill out an application, so bringing a pen couldn't hurt. Bring a little patience too, the audition process can be long. The group wants to hear everyone!

The 2008 audition is especially looking for basses and tenors.

Rehearsals and Performances
Rehearsals are from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the MYC on Mon and Wed.

`Til Dawn rehearses five hours a week, roughly forty-eight weeks a year.

There are an average of forty performances a year.

Performance venues include community events, fairs, festivals, elementary and middle schools, private parties, rehab & health centers, radio and television appearances and public concerts.

Youth in Arts program concerts at middle and elementary schools average as many as 20 performances or more a year. These performances are during the school day.

The group performs annually in their own benefit concert, commonly in May just before Auditions, and always performs at least once each day of the Italian Street Painting Festival every June.

Other common public performances include 142 Throckmorton in Mill Valley, The Sausalito Art Festival, Farmers' Markets in San Rafael and Novato, and festivals around Marin.

Being in `Til Dawn: The Program
The group typically goes on three weekend-long retreats a year to strengthen the interpersonal relationships in the group.

Members are people who want to learn about music, about performing, about listening and about being a part of an ensemble.

The program is tuition based: Program cost for each member is $125 per month beginning June 1, 2008.

There are up to fourteen group members. Each performance strives to have as many members as possible present.

The program satisfies community service requirements at most north bay area high schools.

Austin Willacy is the music director, program director, booking agent and arranges each song. Austin has been with `Til Dawn for more than ten years.
