Why bring New Media Arts to my classroom?

 

In a digital age, computer-based communication has transformed how stories are authored and experienced. Hands-on courses in creating and manipulating digital media: 

  • Foster technical skills that allow students to better navigate a world of information;
  • Help students understand how media is used to create and transmit specific messages;
  • Build critical thinking skills suited for a new century.

Digital Photography

Mentor Artist: Asual Aswad

Grades: 3-12

Duration: 6 or more sessions 

Hands-on activities teach basic photography skills, including how to hold a camera and set controls, the effects of light and color on pictures, and how to download shots onto a computer.  Students will also explore the aesthetic aspects of storytelling, composition, framing, and subject matter.  Students produce at least two final prints, a self-portrait, and an artist statement.

Digital Storytelling 

Mentor Artist: Asual Aswad

Grades: 3-12

Duration: 6 or more sessions 

Students learn the elements of storytelling and translate that vision into a short multimedia story.  Students gain knowledge and skill in story construction, character development, plot, conflict and resolution.  They also learn basic computer skills including digital photography, Photoshop, scanning images and composition.
