| Learning to be a good audience member is an important and rewarding part of a performing arts experience for children. Showing appreciation through laughter, applause and call-and-response initiated by performers are all great ways of participating as an audience member. Students can also participate in the performance through careful observation and active listening. Being courteous to performers and other audience members is also very important. Make sure children understand that live performers can see and hear them. Discuss how students can avoid chatting with neighbors and other disruptive behavior. A few other suggestions for a successful trip:
Study Guide Material:
Review with students before attending the performance.
Before Leaving School:
Divide class into groups, each with an adult chaperone.
Review behavior expectations with children before leaving school.
When You Arrive:
At the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium, form one line outside the door indicated on your confirmation slip. The SOUTH door is closest to the lagoon and the box office. The NORTH door is closes to the highway and Embassy Suites hotel.
At the Showcase Theatre, proceed indoors and form one line in the hallway leading to the theatre doors.
ARRIVE EARLY to take care of all water and restroom needs well before showtime. Youth in Arts Presents performances are approximately one hour in length with no intermission. Frequent water and restroom breaks during the show are disruptive to performers and to the audience.
Seating begins approximately 20 minutes before curtain time. An usher will seat your group. Groups are seated as they arrive, with every effort made to keep classes and schools together. Please follow usher's instructions.
We try to begin all performances at the stated time. Late arrivals will be asked to enter the auditorium or theater quietly and will most likely be seated in the back of the theatre.
During the Performance:
NO FOOD OR DRINKS are allowed in either theatre. Please make sure children and chaperones do not bring food into the theatre.
Keep feet off seats.
Keep feet and hands off seats in row ahead.
Stay quietly in seats during the entire performance.
(If it should become necessary to go out, look for an
usher to escort you to the lobby through a rear door
so that the light from outside will not disturb others.)
No cameras or recording devices
are allowed.
All cel phones must be turned off. Chaperones who anticipate needing to make or receive calls should remain outside the theatre.
