Residency: Bollywood! Contemporary Indian Dance

Artist: Joti Singh

Type: Residencies

Description

What is it like to practice dance from another culture? How does dance relate to film in the Bollywood industry? What are the key elements of dance choreography? How do we work together to create a dance piece that everyone is proud of, and in which everyone participates? The class is a study of choreography (putting together dance steps) and the historical and current cultural and political contexts that shape dance from India. We will focus on learning Bollywood dance, popular dance from Indian cinema. Students will gain an understanding of choreography and how to put together a dance performance. Everyone participates in discussions and dance lessons, and students are encouraged to contribute as much as possible to the choreographic.
